Our First Environmental Wack-O Encounter

We pulled the RV trailer 600 miles to beautiful Colorado in the summer of 1996. That is, my family and I did. My daughter was in High School and enjoying the trip until we got to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Dad warned me about the Environmental Wack-Os, but I thought he might be exaggerating a bit. Well he wasn't. This guy came up to our picnic table yelling and screeming about something. I grabbed a knife from off of the table, but it was no more than a butter knife to spread mustard, and there we were DEFENSELESS.

I couldn't understand the screeming idiot, so my daughter translated for this Environmental Wack-O. It seems that he didn't want us feeding the little squirrels. I was about to feed him a fist sandwich when my wife called him a "jerk" and he went away, thank-goodness. The NUTT frightened my daughter, so much so, that it ruined her trip to the park. Later, I was told that it's against the rules to feed little squirrels in national parks.

Well, LA-TEE-DA... My family has been feeding squirrels on our ranch for 150 years. There are so many of them, I can hear them jabbering outside the second story window of my office. There's dozens of them, and doing quite well on the feed we supply them. But, Noooooooo... I'm just a stupid Rancher that knows nothing about feeding critters. The cattle, deer, ratcoons, turkey, opposum, and even squirrels are in fine health and in large numbers! Thank you very much.

There are just as many little squirrels, chipmunks, or whatever you call them, today as when I was there in 1963 and Rocky Mountain National Park was doing just fine before these Environmental Wack-Os came along. Other campers told us of many Wack-O encounters too terrible to believe. But now, I'm a believer! I only wish that my daughter could've seen the beauty of our national parks the way I did in 1963 before the onslaught of Environmental Wack-Os.
